In the 1920’s, Fred Rabbitt opened “Rabbitt’s” located kitty-corner from our current location.
Rabbitt’s – a gas station/pub was a place where one could fill their tank with gas and belly with
beer. Beer, like gasoline, is a life-giving fuel for many! Eventually, Rabbitt’s was forced out to
make way for the Shell Oil expansion. In July, 1961, the business relocated to the current
location. Then owned by Charlie Carroll and Eddie Chapman, ”Chappie’s”, over the next few
decades, went through many expansions, owners and name changes: Charlie Carroll, Don Carney and Harvery Gonter – “Carroll and Carney’s”, Tom and Louise Johnson - "Porky’s" and the Culp family – "Culp’s Bar & Grill". Jim Hofhenke took over ownership in 2000 and "Culp’s Bar & Grill" became: “THE LAST STAND Bar & Grill”. In 2008, Tony and Sandie Hobbs (San-n-Tone Corp) became the proud new owners of the historical site opting to keep the ever-so-fitting name – “The Last Stand”!
THE LAST STAND is California's last outdoor stand-up bar.
